Case Studies

M H Young Ltd

Melissa started her timber haulage business in March 2009, having decided to follow in the footsteps of her father and grandfather who both worked in the industry.  Her passion for driving led her to become the youngest female driver in Scotland to pass her HGV Class 1 test under a government training initiative.

After four years spent broadening her experience in the industry, Melissa, who comes from Fallin near Stirling, launched M H Young Ltd with support from PSYBT.  In 2009 she was also nominated for the MAN truck & bus company and training group Everywoman Awards Scheme as a finalist in the commercial driver of the year category.

Melissa operates a 44-ton tractor unit with a 42-foot trailer and timber crane which allows her to single handedly load and collect timber from the forests where it has been felled – she then delivers it to sawmills, paper mills and ports.  Melissa often remarks how much she loves her job though her determination and positive outlook were tested over two recent harsh winters as she had to operate in heavy snow and ice, often having to fit wheel chains in severe conditions.

In 2010 Melissa won the Forth Valley final of the PSYBT Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.  Since starting her business she has continued to invest through buying new equipment and she now has two full operating units.
