Leigh Paterson - Kumon

Leigh Paterson started working with Kumon, an organisation who provide individualised Maths and English programmes to children age of 3 upwards, four years ago when she became an assistant at the Bearsden Centre. After Leigh graduated from University, she decided to take on the role as a Kumon Instructor and start her own centre.

Attendance at a Kumon class is on a "drop-in" basis, the children take approximately 20-30 minutes per subject and attend class once or twice per week. The Kumon programmes do not follow the national curriculum but work in a logical and sequential way to develop mathematics and English skills to a level equivalent to standard grade. All children are able to work at a pace suitable to them, meaning it caters for children who need additional support with their learning, through to those who require a greater challenge in addition to their school work.

Leigh was very comfortable with the content and procedure of the Kumon curriculum and with dealing with children and their families. However, starting her own business was a daunting thought. She received help form PSYBT and educated herself by going on business courses and studying all things business.

She believes the challenges have been worth it, Leigh delivers a successful programme to the children she teaches and she plans on developing her business by making more people aware of the Kumon programme and ultimately opening another centre.
